Beth Ezekiel Synagogue Education Program
The primary focus of our education program is the young people of our congregation. We offer programs to our pre-schoolers mostly involving stories, songs, games and crafts such as menorah or mask making or baking challah bread. Our formal teaching begins in Kindergarten and runs until the student’s bar or bat mitzvah. Students learn to read and write Hebrew in order to facilitate participation in religious service. Some modern conversational Hebrew is included. A program of Torah study develops students’ understanding of Jewish history, traditions and values. Other activities include Jewish music, art and literature; baking and cooking Jewish food; craft work such as our Shalom/Peace banner; learning to blow shofar and community service projects.
Students perform at our Chanukah party, Tu B’Shevat service and in our Purim Shpiel. There are also some young people’s services during the year, usually partly led by our students. We have also enjoyed Jewish life outside of Owen Sound, such as our day-long excursion of Jewish Toronto!
Over the years, when there was sufficient interest, we have also offered classes for adults including basic Hebrew and Torah study.
